How To Install Artificial Grass
To keep things simple, you can lay artificial grass by using the required tools listed above and by following our 6 easy steps below:
Read on below for information on each step and learn how to install artificial grass.
Step One: Plan & Clear the Area
Before starting your project, plan out the area to be covered.
Remove the turf to a depth of 2″ using a turf cutter or spade and remove any large stones, bricks, or other obstructions.
When measuring the artificial grass ensure you’re looking to the garden from your main view point i.e. directly outside your property and then take the width x length measurements. You need to make sure you have the pile of the artificial grass facing the property as this will then leave the best desired finish once installed.
Step Two: Create an Edge
If there are no perimeters for the product to butt up against, install an edging system. We recommend securing your artificial turf using either composite or timber frame and if you’re going up against a patio installing a cement haunch.
Step Three: Lay the Base
Install the type 1 MOT to circa 40mm depth, this on average will work out to be 1 tonne of materials every 10M2. If you have a 50M2 garden for example you would need 5 tonne type 1 MOT and 1 tonne grano dust.
After you’ve installed your type 1 MOT, apply your grano dust. Use a piece of timber to drag the sand or dust across the application area to provide a smooth surface. If using sand, the depth should not be more than 20mm.
Step Four: Apply Weed Membrane
Once the base is compacted, apply a weed membrane to the area and secure it in position with 4″ galvanised steel nails every 0.75m around the perimeter. This will prevent weed growth whilst allowing water drainage.
Trim off any waste membrane from the edges.
Step Five: Lay the Artificial Grass & Trim Edges
Unroll the artificial turf over the area, being careful to not move the weed membrane. Having the pile direction running toward the house will give the best look from the windows of the house.
Once positioned, trim the excess artificial grass. We recommend changing blades every 10 metres to ensure the blade stays sharp enough.
